You can turn back time...
The adage that you're only as old as you feel has been put to the test by a hi-tech fitness assessment.
The big three-zero. It's the birthday that often triggers an early-life crisis as we dream of being 21 again. But not for Perth mum Angela Rampton. She's on top of the world and reckons she feels and looks 10 years younger. That's because, scientifically speaking, she is 10 years younger.
Angela Rampton
As incredible as it sounds, this mother of two has managed to reverse the ageing process by almost a decade.
Her birth certificate may say to celebrate a significant milestone but, internally, her body is nowhere near that old. On the inside, Angela is 21.
In November she discovered her cells were ageing too fast. This was revealed using cutting-edge technology known as Bio lmpedance Analysis, or BIA, which measures a person's real age.
Biologically, Angela was 29 years old, but this space-age science - used by NASA to monitor astronauts in flight - calculated that her body was really in the same condition as someone several years older - 33 in fact. The theory is that the key to a person's fitness levels lies in the ratio between body fat and muscle stores - healthy people have more muscle than fat.
BIA works by measuring the way a low dose of electrical current flows through a person's system. The idea is that lean tissues, or muscles, conduct electricity well - unlike fat and bone.
One of the most vital pieces of information this analysis provides is the weight of your muscles and learning to build this muscle mass is the most important health skill a person can have. Strangely, it's a little-known equation, but good muscle mass is the most effective way to combat ageing.
In Angela's case there were obvious factors contributing to the stress on her system - she'd given birth to her second child just 10 weeks earlier, was breast-feeding still carrying post-pregnancy kilos.
But Perth naturopaths Eleanor McKenzie-Russell and Marion Volk, who conduct BIA testing at their Cambridge Health Centre, delivered the good news - that they could come up with a simple and natural plan to stop or even reverse this ageing process in 12 weeks.
Armed with courage, determination and a good deal of guts, Angela took up the challenge.
Joining her in this fascinating trial wore former world fitness champion Sami Renouf-Bromley and businessman Rob Grummet.
Sami Renouf-Bromley
As Sami has a near-perfect body sculpted by years of discipline and training, Eleanor and Marion knew her real age would be that of someone much younger, but even they were staggered when this 41-year-old personal trainer registered a biological age of 33.
With an internal report card worthy of five gold stars, there was only one obstacle to Sami's excellent health - an extremely high level of fluid retention, Her mission over the coming months would be to reduce this by half.
Rob Grummet
IT professional Rob, whose BIA chart showed general good health and a real age of 49 as opposed to his actual age of 52, had a different job to do if he wanted to turn back the clock. Business lunches and overseas travel made healthy eating difficult and at 95.2kg he was 6kg too heavy. Coupled with a lack of regular exercise, Rob needed to skip the corporate breadbasket, drink less of his favourite red wine, avoid dessert and get active.
Eleanor devised individual diet and exercise programs for each.
